We are often asked if we sort our
images when we come back from a days shooting, discarding
those that we do not feel will make a stand alone
image. The answer to that question is No. We never
do and for three reasons. One reason is that when
we shoot Raw we can often miss the quality of an
image when viewed as a thumbnail amongst many other
thumbnails. Our attention will be drawn to the more
colourful ones and if we are not careful we will
discard an image that really should be retained.
There is also the possibility that we may want to
use part of that image at some time in the future
in a montage, but the final reason is that it just
takes too long to sort through hundreds of thumbnails
just to throw out a couple of dozen. It is not worth
the time it takes.
DVD's are cheap and it is probably
better to just save all you shoot and use the time
you would have spent on sorting images, creating
them. In this video we try to demonstrate what we
mean by taking a small crop of an image and working
that image though Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). We use
the new graduated filter in ACR and also risk some
interpolation to get an A3 image from a small part
of our digital file. We also do a little creative
stuff by bringing the bird out in colour through
a mono background. This has the advantage that we
kill all the background distractions and our main
point of interest then leaps from the image.
All this from an image we could easily have thrown
out?
