There is a very well known saying that
says you cannot make a Silk purse out of a Sows
ear. Now this saying or something similar gets said
quite often in relation to photography and the images
we produce, but we wonder if that old saying is
still entirely true. Modern software is now so powerful
that we can improve almost any image in some way
or another, but can we make a Silk Purse out of
a Sows ear?
As long as the image is sharp enough
and we are using powerful software like Photoshop
CS-3 we think that this old saying could be challenged.
Of course there are two issues we have to grapple
with in our digital photography.
The first is knowing what needs
to be done to give us the improvements we would
like and then how to create those changes via our
software. Well, the techniques are fairly simple
ones and once we learn a technique or two, they
can be used in a variety of different circumstances
and different subjects.
What we need to do is to take just
one step at a time and work through a manipulation
in some sort of order. Rarely is a great image made
with the use of one tool. More often we need to
make a series of small changes and its only
when we add up all those small changes and see the
final result that the Silk purse can appear.
On this DVD we take images that,
more often than not, would be left unseen or even
discarded. So, perhaps we can make a Silk Purse
out of a Sows Ear after all. However, that is for
you to decide.
